Tragedy struck Agip area along Ada George Road in Port Harcourt on Thursday evening after a police shooting allegedly caused a fatal motor accident, leaving at least four people dead and several others injured.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident unfolded around 5:00 PM when police officers stationed near the busy Agip Junction flagged down a Lexus vehicle. The officers reportedly suspected the driver of being an internet fraudster.
Witnesses stated that when the motorist failed to stop, an officer opened fire on the moving vehicle. A bullet struck the driver from behind, causing him to lose control of the car. The unguided vehicle veered off the road and plowed into bystanders and other road users.
The crash resulted in immediate chaos, with four individuals—including the driver and pedestrians—losing their lives at the scene and in nearby hospitals. Multiple injured victims were rushed to medical facilities in the area for urgent treatment.
The violent event triggered intense anger and panic across the Agip and Ada George neighborhoods, with residents expressing outrage over the police officer’s actions.
As tension remains high in the area, residents are awaiting an official statement from the Rivers State Police Command regarding the identity of the involved officer and the commencement of formal investigations.
