Nigeria’s Super Falcons made a resounding statement of intent at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), dismantling Egypt 6–2 on Wednesday night at the Stade Moulay Hassan to march into the quarter-finals in style.
The 10-time African champions produced a masterclass in attacking football, putting on a six-goal spectacle that ruthlessly dismantled the North Africans and reinforced their status as tournament favorites.
Asisat Oshoala set the tone in the 21st minute, calmly dispatching a penalty after a VAR review confirmed an Egyptian handball inside the box. Deep into first-half stoppage time, substitute Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage by capping off a clever short-corner routine with Toni Payne and Rinsola Babajide. Although Egypt pulled a goal back moments before the whistle to make it 2–1, any hopes of a comeback were swiftly extinguished after the restart.
The Super Falcons emerged for the second half with relentless intensity. Substitute Uchenna Kanu restored the two-goal cushion in the 57th minute with a crisp, left-footed strike. Nigeria’s dominance was further underlined late in the match as VAR was called into action twice more, yielding two penalties: Christy Ucheibe converted in the 80th minute, before skipper Rasheedat Ajibade coolly dispatched the second eight minutes later.
The crowning moment arrived deep in stoppage time when Monday and Ajibade combined brilliantly to slice through Egypt’s exhausted defence, setting up Joy Omewa to tap home her maiden WAFCON goal and cap off a dominant evening.
Having comfortably topped their group affairs, the Super Falcons now turn their sights to the knockout stages, where a heavyweight quarter-final clash against fierce rivals Cameroon awaits on Sunday.
