Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has raised an alarm over an alleged plot by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze the state government’s bank accounts ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi.
According to the statement, Governor Adeleke claimed he received “credible intelligence” indicating that the anti-graft agency had concluded plans to block all state government accounts as well as those belonging to key administration officials.
Adeleke warned that such an action, if carried out, would amount to “the height of lawlessness” and is deliberately calculated to paralyze governance and state operations in the final countdown to the election.
“The governor affirmed that there is no legal basis or justification for any push to freeze the state government accounts, declaring that the anti-graft agency has no legal powers to freeze the account of a state government,” the statement read in part.
The governor maintained that the move is part of broader political pressure and orchestrated interference aimed at undermining his administration in the lead-up to the polls.
The political tension comes as Governor Adeleke, contesting under the banner of the Accord Party, seeks re-election against his main contender, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has yet to issue an official response to the allegations, though efforts to reach the anti-graft body for comments are ongoing.
