US President Donald Trump has called on British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to take strong action against illegal migration, warning that the growing influx of migrants is “killing” the United Kingdom.
Speaking in an interview with Newsmen on Wednesday, President Trump asserted that immigration is a critical challenge the new British leader cannot afford to ignore, despite initial attempts to sidestep the topic upon taking office.
“He’s going to have to mention it because it’s killing your country,” Trump said, arguing that previous efforts under former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer were insufficient. Describing the situation in stark terms, Trump added, “They’re coming from Africa… South America… different parts of Asia. They’re invading Europe. It’s an invasion, and the UK is a prime suspect.”
Trump’s comments came shortly after more than 500 migrants crossed the English Channel into British waters. People smugglers reportedly launched 11 small boats from departure points spanning the French and Belgian coastlines, ranging from Belgium to Dieppe.
Recent Home Office figures highlight the ongoing pressure on UK border security, recording 172 crossings on Wednesday of Burnham’s first week in office, followed by 366 on Thursday, and another 103 on Friday.
When questioned earlier this week regarding plans for migrant accommodation and whether asylum hotels would be closed, a Downing Street spokesperson noted that government efforts remain ongoing under the direction of the Home Secretary, with no immediate changes to policy announced.
Despite potential friction over key policies—including energy strategy, where Trump has pushed for expanded North Sea oil drilling, and diplomat selections—the two leaders have reportedly maintained stable communication. Reflecting on a recent introductory phone call with Prime Minister Burnham, Trump characterized the conversation as “interesting” and constructive, wishing the British leader “good luck and Godspeed” as he takes on the challenges ahead.
